Taking Care of Yourself After Surgery

  • You may require medications after surgery, please consult with your surgeon or physician for post-operative care instructions.
  • Take medications as directed on the label. Resume your daily prescription medication as instructed by your doctor.
  • Call your physician if you think your medications are not helping or you are having side effects.
  • If you are taking antibiotics, take them until they are gone even if you feel better.
  • If you are taking medications that make you drowsy, do not drive or use heavy equipment.
  • Remember to not drink any alcoholic beverages, drive a car or make legal decisions for 24 hours after receiving general anesthesia.
  • Remember, you may have a sore throat after general anesthesia.
  • Remember to keep bandages dry and in place unless instructed differently.
  • If you are diabetic, monitor blood sugars closely. Call your doctor if not controlled.
  • Wash hands frequently.
  • To assist in healing, stop or limit smoking.

Follow additional instructions given to you the day of surgery.
